Minnesotans boast that they love to eat, a claim supported by the wealth of Minnesota restaurants offering a wide variety of food and drink. The cuisine in many restaurants reflects the Scandinavian and German heritage of the state. As one would expect in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, fish, particularly walleye, figures prominently on many menus. Restaurants offer everything from hearty meat-and-potatoes Midwestern fare in the smaller towns to more adventurous ethnic cuisine in the metro areas. Some restaurants in downtown Saint Paul offer dishes based on Native American foods, such as wild game and fish or wild rice, which is native to Minnesota wetlands. Because Minnesotans love their sweets, diners will have no trouble finding Norwegian desserts, caramel rolls and a variety of tasty pastries featuring blueberries, a state favorite.
